Smother me
in Greenpeace sleep
your autumn kisses
returning soon
delving into
Indian Summer
as the Monarchs return
golden orange treasures
take flight
as the Forests spread their
big, green hands wide
scattering color spots
flickering dots
seeking an autumn sky
the climate wheel spins…
Monarch majesty soars
pulling my shadowed soul
into the glory of their flight
promising an unfettered fall
and dreams of vivid color

Beautiful. I’m right there with you!
Thank you kindly, Desert Dweller π
I love the Monarchs! Sadly, we don’t see too many of them here, but it’s always a treat when I spot one. And I, too, am eagerly awaiting Fall … anything but this dreadful humidity!!
Debbie, we used to have so many Monarchs that migrated through here. Over time, it seems their numbers are decreasing π I believe it is caused by the destruction of the forests for building. Yes, we could all use some nice, fall weather!
It’s so sad when the summer ends but at least fall brings lots or beauty!
So true, Marissa. Usually, we still have summer in September here, but you never know…
Yes, so do we. It usually takes a while heating up and then the heat can last until November. When the kids are back in school though, it just doesn’t feel like true summer.
Yeah that’s right, something changes when those school bells ring.
Monarchs seem to be globally significant of late summer, early Autumn. Beautiful imagery!!
Thanks so much. Sadly, it seems their numbers are decreasing year by year as they migrate through our area of Texas. I can remember one year, not terribly long ago, and they were just everywhere. I remember being out in the country surrounded by all these beautiful butterflies. I’m hoping to see more this year π
Thank you for being so colorful.
Having a little color in the world always helps, π Thank you for your comment.
You are very graciously welcome.
it’s too bad Jim left us so early.
Oh, I know…very sad indeed. I love his music.
This reminded me of a trip many autumns ago–we stopped at a Kansas rest area at dusk and made grilled cheese sandwiches on our camp stove. On the way to the restrooms, we saw a tree entirely covered with sleeping monarch butterflies, probably in the midst of migration to somewhere. I will never forget it. Beautiful poem, thanks for sparking that memory. π
Thank you, Joan. That is a wonderful memory. One year they came through here, and there was so many of them. When you see them in such large groups it is breathtaking. I have several lantana plants ready to greet them this year π
Monarch butterflies do seem to make your soul take flight. Your beautiful post speaks to that.
Thanks, Bernadette. They are so glorious. I’m looking forward to a butterfly filled fall.
Ahh…this is beautiful, Lana. A celebration of autumn to come. The Monarchs seem amazing. Still enjoying the height of summer though in the crazy heat of Florida where I’m on a break with my mother. Loving it but glad I live somewhere with seasons! Oh, never heard of Jim Croce before and love it. Thank you for sharing. π
Thank you, Annika. The Monarchs are absolutely amazing. I know Florida is hot, it’s pretty much the same where I live, only less humid. Jim Croce is one of my favorite artists. .His songs are beautiful. π
a wonderful poetry. a true hymn to nature
Thank you so much!
In September as we transition into fall, this is a poem to get one thinking about the grand rhythms of nature — a lovely poem that asks one to contemplate a while. And most of us need more contemplation.
Contemplation really calms me….I need more time for it. Thank you, Michael.
