In the valley of the kings
hear plainly
the ghost sighs of slaves
toiling
muscles, strenuous and gleaming
in the scalding sun
pounding upon limestone
hoisting the stones skyward
closer to the Gods
Below the surface
cavernous labyrinths
open their arms
to eternal secrets
of kings and queens
and conniving lovers
skeletons of serpents
Clothed in opulence
they now race shadows
in death
colossal pyramids stretch
their spires
waving leisurely
to clouds
searching for paltry respite
to the endless sun
seeking secrets
of ancient seas
knitting the hierarchy
of history
treading through
the dust of time
Sheer power of mortals
engrossed in the awe
of empire building
Centuries of lessons
sketched in hieroglyphics
bespeak the thrill of hidden treasure
legacy and lust
emblazoned and bold
still imprinted upon the sun

Ah – so, you are teaching about ancient Egypt then? Instilling the grandeur and mystery in young minds if your poem is anything to go by……
Thanks Pauline. I’ve actually been watching the History Channel, ha ha! I’ve always been fascinated by ancient Egypt, though π
Damn!! π
An interesting piece of writing… lovely!
Hello Iris, happy Sunday. Thank you very much!
G’day Lana, my pleasure! Have a lovely day π
Outer toil, inner secrets, all baking under the unforgiving sun, turning into history. Great sensory words and use of literary devices. I felt like I was right there. Have you ever visited the pyramids? Well done, Lana! π
Oh Joan, I would love to visit the pyramids, alas, I’ve not been able to yet. Hopefully in the future. Thank you so much for the lovely compliment!
Wonderful as always, Lana. I love how you capture the sense of grandeur in the place and the long arc of time that immortalizes but also brings all to dust.
Thank you so much, Diana. I love how even your comments sound like poetry π
HA! π Have a great week.
That one does. Have a great week, also π
I can smell the opulence!
There’s nothing like the burning smell of opulence ;-D
Reblogged this on John Cowgill's Literature Site.
Thanks John. Have a great week π
You are very graciously welcome. YOU have too much fun.
Wow! Wonderfully written, Lana and brings the ancient era immediately to life in all its facets. They had an amazing vision!
The history of ancient Egypt has always fascinated me. They definitely had amazing vision! Thanks so much, Annika.
Beautiful Lana. You evoke the past of the Egyptian desert when Pharaohs ruled. π
Thanks Debby. That period of history is so fascinating!
As someone whose ancestors partly originate from the land of the Valley of the Kings I can only add my praise to your lovely poem, Lana! And as someone who loves historical novels your invention of the historical poem is just brilliant! π
Thank you so much on both accounts, Sarah! I am truly fascinated with the ancient Egyptians. They accomplished amazing things. I hope to see the pyramids someday.
IΒ΄m sure you will see them in person someday – they are amazing! ThereΒ΄s so much to learn and admire from this long gone civilization. The art and architecture is simply stunning. π
