Today is β¦
sunlight streaming
through cottage windows
as a silver tabby
long and lean reclines
on the twisted colors
of a braided rug
in full sabertooth glory
Underneath it all
is a soft simmering
the melting of summer
into fall
a profound slowness
distinct beats of change
in the air
The heat is subdued now
as if someone walked away
from the thermostat
and left the arrow button
on warm
These longer nights
darkly delicate
will gently smother that golden sun
For now there is shelter
against the raking fingers
of a harsh wind
Take the peace of a measured moment
package it
in the muted hues of fall
There is nothing
to trade for this hour
the tabby rises
and softly rubs against my arm
the silkiness envelopes my heart
the love curling around the room
simple and serene

Thank you I REALLY like this. Style is wonderful.
Thanks so much, Bioman!
Autumn is my favorite season, so this melted into my very soul. I love “the twisted colors
of a braided rug,” old-fashioned and timeless, scraps twined into something beautiful and useful. The seamless alliteration of “soft simmering” and “darkly delicate.” And especially these lines: “Take the peace of a measured moment / package it / in the muted hues of fall / There is nothing / to trade for this hour. So true, Lana. π
Fall is a nice time. I think October might be my favorite month. I’m off to a bad start, though. I caught a flu-type virus right off the bat and lost my voice (and I don’t get sick very much). Ah well, hopefully it get better, and I can sit outside and enjoy the cooler weather π Thanks, Joan!
What a way to start off your favorite month! I launched into October with a toothache… an old root canal gone bad. And it won’t be fixed until the 25th, the endodontist’s first available appointment. At least I can wrap up in a sweater and enjoy the trees going red and orange.

sweet but I’d prefer the warm weather stick around for a while longer … which it won’t. ugh!
I know what you mean, Jim. I don’t like winter π
brrrrr! we have had cold rain for I dunno how long.
Oh, yes, the heat is subdued now. Only those who live in Texas will understand.
That’s right, Jo. You know full well what I’m talking about, it is still there, but not quite as intense.
A lovely poem, Lana… beautifully serene! β π
Thanks so much, Iris. I like the fall season. I’m so happy that it is cooling off just a bit π
My pleasure, Lana. Enjoy the season! π
A lovely luxurious stretch into the fall, Lana. I feel like the tabby. π
It’s a nice time of the year, Diana. Ah, the love and devotion of a silver tabby, you just can’t beat it π xoxo
So many lovely images, Lana!
Thanks so much, Betty! I’ve been down with the flu, but I’m hoping to get back to enjoying the season π
Lana, sorry to hear you’ve had the flu! Hope you’re getting over it now….take good care of yourself! π
You paint a warm and snuggly picture of the onset of autumn Lana. π x
Thanks Debby. It’s a nice time of the year. It’s has begun a bit rocky for me though, I’ve been down for a week with the flu. And I rarely get sick! Oh well, I’m coming out of it and will still have time to enjoy the nice weather π
Oh no Lana, you are an early victim! Get well soon! <3
Thanks Debby!
π
In full sabertooth glory – totally love that line! ππ»
Hope you’re feeling better and that you’ve got your voice back? I catched a cold early this season too which is very unusual. I’ve been to the doctor to get my flu shot today, don’t want to get one of those!! π
Some of those little tabbies think they are just so bad, LOL. I lost my voice for a whole week, Sarah. I couldn’t believe it. This was one of two times in my life that the flu really got me. I might have been the first person in the world to catch it this early, haha. I’m glad you got your shot, and no, you don’t want it!
Well, at least you should be safe for the whole winter now. π
