The back of a poor person’s house
is peeling
like a black economy
like someone locked
the dark ghost inside
mold stalks along the perimeter
devouring walls
the empty cupboards scream
the front porch dips
to the center fault
of a crumbling foundation.
The landlord knocks loud
pounds the frame.
Come sweep
these threadbare floors
let the dust seep
into the pores
of your skin.
In time, you’ll learn acceptance
come climb down the steps
of desperation
the dreadful lullaby
diffusing all around us.
sweet!

Thanks Jim. Just a little reminder to be thankful π
I love the personification in this poem, Lana… the mold stalking and devouring walls, the cupboards screaming, the front porch dipping, as if the house was more alive than the unfortunate people living in it. I did a similar post last week about a Rust Belt city, and what we see there: https://justjoan42.wordpress.com/2018/11/18/brother-can-we-hitch-a-ride/. π
Thanks so much, Joan. Yes, the house is alive in this unfortunate scenario also. My heart goes out to all people who are challenged this time of the year, and well, basically all year. It is truly a time to reflect and give back what we can. Thank you, xoxo
A grim one, Lana. Wonderfully described and the hopelessness feels so relevant.
It is a bit grim, Diana. It’s my wish that we could do better as a world force. I think it might be even worse now with all the wealthy hot shots in power.
Your images are reminders that there are many who will be without this holiday season and makes us grateful for what we have. May each of us give a little to help others.
Yes, the holidays are both joyful and sorrowful. It is truly a time to reflect and be thankful. xo
A grim reminder. So dark, but lots of truth. π
Yes for sure, many people fall into hard times, more so now, I believe since we have a government for the wealthy. xo
This poem is so powerful, Lana. I currently live in a small town where this scene is common. We must indeed count our blessings! π
thank you, Betty. Yes, so many people do struggle everyday just too keep a roof over their heads. I fear it might get worse considering the current political climate. xoxo
That worries me too…. Trying to remain hopeful. π
Yes for sure, Betty. xx
