The oppressor
dark clad oozing malice
enters here at the mouth of the alley
watching, waiting
as time yawns carelessly
on a nonchalant afternoon
Three blocks down
students spill from school
scattering like racing inkblots
from a fifth period essay
left unfinished
Two girls turn a corner
go down the alley
drinking up youth’s spicy nectar
in May’s sunshine
But he sees and considers them
from his own putrid soul
from his own prison of darkness
a prison without release
He is sure she knows him
that one
yes, he’s sure
that she has sown his ardor over
with the smiling steel teeth
of farm plow
The calm afternoon interrupted
by shrill pops and shrapnel
a burst of wings forth
into the tainted air
one wounded bird
escaping the bonds of gravity
seeking skyward solace
But here on Earth
the madman still breathes, envisions
and now the people come forth
to whisper on the wind
“Ellen, Ellen”
A dark little piece!
