The night we
swam in the pond
dark water and moonlight
our teeth slightly chattering,
brilliantly gleaming
in the not quite warm spring
glad your farmhouse
was six miles out of town
sanctuary to hide Strawberry Hill wine
that tasted somewhat
like the sour grapes of living
mixed with lifesavers
treading water
giggling girls, silly splashing
gum tree casting shadows
car lights bounced across the vista
somewhere in the distance
we raced for the dock
scurry, hurry
as little night trolls scrambled
purveyors of night schemes
keepers of secrets
Who could forget Boone’s Farm? It did taste like “sour grapes of living / mixed with lifesavers.” And that familiar panic when you thought someone was coming? Nice alliteration and embedded rhyming. Especially loved the magical ending… “as little night trolls scrambled / purveyors of night schemes / keepers of secrets.” A story we all know well, masterfully told. Great job, Lana!:)
Thank you, Joan. That Boone’s Farm was rather unforgettable, ha ha. π
Reblogged this on John Cowgill's Literature Site and commented:
By a lovely lady named Lana who is probably enjoy having her beautiful feet in the pond.
Thank you, John. Hope you are having a lovely spring evening.
You are very graciously welcome. A little rough right now but making it.
Beautiful!
Thanks Tribalmystic! Always good seeing you on WordPress π
Thank you. π
Isn’t it great to have such memories of being a teenager! Beautifully written!
Thank you, Pauline. Yes, the teenage years are full of great memories (some not so great, ha ha). Looking back is always sweeter.
Wonderful imagery… somewhat reminiscent of a scene in Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood! π
Thank you, Sha’Tara. It is a bit reminiscent, I hadn’t thought about that, it has been awhile since I read it. A great excuse to re-read with summer coming up π
Summers coming… at some point…
Before we know it…
This is beautifully nostalgic L T!
Thanks Holly. I seem to have a thing for swimming π
Nighttime sweet and girly fun!
Thank you, Camie!
Lovely… exciting adventures… such sweet reflections. π Beautiful, Lana. π
Thanks Iris. The more adventurous days for sure π
A pleasure to read, Lana. π
Putting aside the blatant breaches of health and safety… π
Great piece of writing, LT showing off your ability to place a reader at the scene. Fortunately it was dark and I couldn’t hear any secrets for the splashing and ear piercing scream when someone saw me behind the gum tree and mistook me for a night troll π
Phil, you make me laugh so much. I wish you could bottle that wonderful sense of humor and give it to all of us, then I wouldn’t have to troll around the dark recesses of memory to dig up a story. Or perhaps I would….humor is always such great fun!
Oh thanks LT. The deal is you keep digging round the recesses of your memory for your excellent stories and I’ll try and make an entertaining quip once in a while π
Lovely, Lana. Brings back memories. For me, it was Boone’s Farm Apple Wine and nighttime skinny dips in Lake Champlain in VT. I love how so many of us have similar memories of our youths. You captured those days beautifully. π
Oh yes, I think youth and Boone’s Farm go hand in hand, right along with night time dips in pools, ponds and lakes. Good memories of a more carefree time. Thanks Diana π
A fun blast from the past! lol π¦
Thank you so much. It’s fun looking back on some of these things we did π
Love your references to the past, Lana! And who can’t identify with the secrets that only besties share?!?
Thanks Debbie. Looking back, a very special time to have a super best friend π
very beautiful.
Thanks so much, Newwhitebear π
smile
Lovely to reminisce with your wonderful words of imagery here Lana. Wonderfully written. π
Thanks so much, Debby!
π Most welcome Lana.
Beautifully written with a sweet story of youth…can just sense the cold, excitement and then fear of being seen. Lovely ending of ‘as little night trolls scrambled/ purveyors of night schemes/keepers of secrets’. When those secrets feel large enough to fill your world. Have a great weekend, Lana. πβ€οΈ
Thank you so much, Annika, for your gracious comments. I’m glad you enjoyed reading this. What a wonderful way to describe those teenage secrets, “when they feel large enough to fill your world.” That’s really how those secrets seem back then. Have a lovely weekend also, Annika π
