Highway

My dreams stretch along

a certain expanse of highway

where space hangs

in loops of golden unison

where the ghost towns mix

with sunflower fields

Even this flat land is

beautiful now…

me

the concrete

velocity

and

desertion

I could go on

forever

avoiding the end

pushing the limits of where

the swirl of the earth

curtsies to a new moon

  1. This is a thought-provoking poem. I’ll have to sit and read this again when I have more time. I enjoy your writing!

  2. I love the life and death metaphor of “ghost towns mixing with sunflower fields.” And these lines were powerful, Lana: “me / the concrete / velocity / and / desertion / I could go on / forever.” They spoke to me of change, peeling out of your old life and not looking back, heading into a bold, new reality you can’t even visualize yet. πŸ™‚

    • Thank you, Joan. We have so many ghost towns in this area of Texas. I’ve always been fascinated by them. I’m a huge Fannie Flagg fan, one of my favorite movies is Fried Green Tomatoes. πŸ˜€

  3. An open road and time to enjoy the ride – what else do we need, right? Beautiful poem, Lana! Makes me long for discovering those endless plains and deserted towns. πŸ˜„
