Summertime, Gnomes and Rock Music

Well here it is, almost the end of June, and I am way behind schedule as usual. Why is this? I think the Stupid Bug bit me. I just injured my back because I went to move a trunk, which on its own was not really that heavy, but I had forgotten that I filled it up with a bunch of stuff which of course, made it much heavier. So I just reached down to grab it and (insert shrill scream here, and a few choice words too). My back of all things! The good news, if there is ever any good news in this situation, was that I only impacted a muscle and luckily did not have to end up in traction anywhere, but the bad news is that it hurts (and has continued to hurt). After a week of medicine and muscle relaxers, I am finally seeing some improvement. So instead of working on the millions of things that I need to be, including a book trailer for my book that is coming out, I have been painting gnomes, talking to cats, and napping. I haven’t really been able to concentrate on these types of tasks with my aching back, and the gnome was originally headed to the trash before I turned his life around. You can see the before and after photos. The colors are fairly gnome-like except his basket tray is painted purple and gold that are the colors of my high school, former glory and all that, I mean, I just figured, why not?

Meanwhile College Boy, also known as, Boy Who Should Have Gotten A Summer Job is back home. He frequently bothers me when I am gnome painting and napping. “Umm, mom…wake up, mom….”
He says mom differently than my daughters do. Their mom is shrill, more like, “Mom!” as in “Mom, have you been coloring your own hair!!” This question would be asked by my younger daughter who was a professional hairstylist for quite awhile. She notices everything and will call me out on my hair in a New York minute. Such questioning will have me answering Andrea of the Perfect Bone Structure in a nonchalant way, as in: “Honey, whatever do you mean? YouTube? No never….”
Anyway, College Boy Who Needs A Job will pop up from time to time asking me to fund his various activities which are all so important, and on which, his very life depends. Sometimes he even volunteers to do chores, but he tends to do them badly, although I am thinking about having him paint, not gnomes, but maybe the side of the house that gets that lovely westerly sun.
The local radio station has been playing a lot of Aerosmith lately including the one song that used to never be played and one of my personal favorites, Kings and Queens. I don’t know why I’m excited about the radio since I have my own music collection, but these days it doesn’t take much to excite me. I also learned that none other than Joey Kramer now lives in Texas. This really surprised the Rock Guy who had no clue about this either. He now lives in Georgetown, a name that sounds like it should be an English colony, but that actually a suburb of Austin Texas. Who knew? So now, if we happen to be strolling around Georgetown, and we run into him, we can be all surprised-like and say something such as: “Joey Kramer…Aerosmith…no way!” So the summer of 2016 continues to unfold. At least the heat was a bit late to arrive, so I’m not completely fried out of my mind, but give it a couple weeks…

  1. Kings and Queens is one of my favorites too! A hidden gem in the Aerosmith catalogue. Hey, sorry to hear about your back! Hope you are feeling better soon!

  2. Jim Jim

you should articulate the “choice words” you had – orrrrrr – provide the blanks so we can fill in for ourselves. I lived for years next door to Air Force jet mechanics. they have a very extensive vocabulary in the “choice words” area.

  3. I hope your back starts feeling better. At least the gnome got a fresh new look out of it. Your descriptions of your kids got me laughing, so your sense of humor is clearly intact. 🙂

    • Thanks Diana :-). I’m already a bit better. I need to slow down some and remember to think before I do such things. I hope you have a terrific weekend!

  4. Ugh, don’t you HATE back problems?? I’ve learned to move very carefully after a particularly nasty bout of sciatica. Some advice? Ice is your friend. So are exercises…and a nice visit to the chiropractor now and again. But yes, ’tis hard to concentrate when all one’s thought processes are immersed in pain. Rest well, my new friend.

    • Thanks so much Debbie. I am already much better. I need to slow down some, I’m too much of a workaholic. I may look in to the chiropractor if I continue to have issues, I missed the ice boat on this one. You are truly a wonderful new friend for me too, and I hope you have a great weekend!

  5. I hope very much that your back improves soon! Those pains are really a pain the a…! Taking hot baths also help relay those muscles but I guess, it´s the wrong season for that 😉 That gnome looks absolutely lovely! 🙂 Great job! Aww- Aerosmith – one of the best…:) Have a wonderful weekend!

    • Thank you so much. I have been taking the hot baths in spite of the heat, ha ha. It’s a day by day thing, and today is…another day 🙂 Thanks so much for the gnome compliment, I will embrace that, coming from a real artist:))) Aerosmith is pretty cool. I hope you have a terrific weekend as well!

      • You´re very welcome! And thank YOU for saying that I´m a real artist! 🙂 I´m merely an amateur but I´m having the best of fun doing it 😀 Looking forward to see more from your artsy side as well 😉 xoxo
