The hum of wings
mid-air pause
hovering
my quick gasp of breath
at the sight
of the brilliantly colored throat
swift flight
eyes darting furtively
eyes that perceive
the smallest motion, a breath
In another time
other birds
have worshiped
at the brim
of massive orange trumpet vines
now becoming
folio sheets torn
from life’s old scrapbook
far away from
this place with its busy side street
murmuring memory banter
interweaving into
a symphony of honeysuckle
sweet
Thanks Jim, happy weekend!
We don’t see anywhere near enough hummingbirds here! They’re beautiful, amazing creatures, aren’t they?
Oh yes they are, I adore them. My grandmother had a large trumpet vine by her back porch and I first saw hummingbirds there as a little girl π
A lovely tribute to the hummers at this time of year! We have a couple hanging around with that flash of red color.
Aren’t they gorgeous Jo? I love watching them, I haven’t spotted any here just yet π
Beautiful images LT. https://houseofheartweb.wordpress.com : new blog
We don’t have hummingbirds in this part of the world Lana, sadly. They seem such amazing little creatures it doesn’t surprise me that most everyone who does have them is in love with them. Even though I’ve never seen one in the flesh, I thought the first seven lines conveyed both the sight and surprised delight at seeing them perfectly.
Aw, it would be so neat if you did, Pauline, but I’m sure you have some other amazing birds that are just as cool. Hummingbirds are so tiny and fast and truly thrilling to see π
An inspiring nature poem! So descriptive of the gorgeous hummingbird… beautiful, Lana. π
Thanks Iris. They are such beautiful, fragile birds and always a treat to see.
Always a pleasure, Lana.
I’ve always been a bit afraid of hummingbirds…they seem almost insect like. You’ve captured them well though.
They aren’t much larger than insects, for sure. They may be a bit intimidating because of their speed. I’m amazed at their colorful beauty.
Love this: “other birds / have worshiped / at the brim / of massive orange trumpet vines.” I just saw a hummingbird a day or so ago, first one of the season, hovering near our magenta rosebush. They love those brightly colored flowers. π
They sure do, Joan. They seem to like my lantana pretty well. Thanks so much π
Reblogged this on John Cowgill's Literature Site.
Thanks John…I hope you had a great weekend! π
I did, thank you. Hope you did too.
Hummingbird flies like your words fly into our minds.
A beautiful and delightful poem
Thank you so much, New White Bear. I’m a big fan of hummingbirds π
Hummingbirds are very nice
Beautiful, Lana. I love those tiny bold birds. A “symphony of honeysuckle” – sublime. π
Thanks so much, Diana. I hope you have a lovely week π
A lovely tale about those lovely sweet birds. π
Thank you, Debby….they are among my favorite birds π
Mine too. π
Beautiful! “A symphony of honeysuckle” just perfectly combines all the lovely senses and impressions your poem evokes, Lana! I saw a hummingbird once in Granada in Spain and was mesmerized! So beautiful! And so fast! It was gone before I even got hold of my camera! π <3
They are truly amazing little creatures. I haven’t seen one yet this summer, don’t know where they hide. I’ll bet they are difficult to photograph. Thanks so much, Sarah!
Hope youΒ΄ll see one soon! π π
I hope you have a lovely week π
Thank you, I hope you do also.
