Gauguin’s Landscape with Peacocks

The sky is on fire

ruby red sunset

streaked with desire

as if painted fish

swim the the mountains

A path spilling from the hills

brimming fiery, red clay

its flame builds in dusk

Ah, divide the world

into sunsets

Here the village sits

a map point

in jungle dense

magnificent

On the edge

of unresolved dreams

this sultry peace

crowded with lush

competitors

At the intersection of

secluded moments

peacocks

shrill in their strut

vault of heaven

inside their plumage

await Hera’s chariot

    • Thanks, Pauline! I actually dedicated this poem to you and another of my artist blogging friends. I had forgotten to list that, but I went back and added it. I adore artists, you guys bring so much color and beauty into a sometimes dreary world. Thank you for that! xoxo

      • I am immensely touched! That is so sweet – and me in the same blog post that features a Gauguin ๐Ÿ˜€ If only! I look at his use of colour and form and it blows my mind!! Thank you, xoxo

        • You are very welcome, Pauline. It is truly amazing work, I never knew much about him until I saw that painting several weeks ago. I just love it. I am so glad that we have the Arts especially during these troubling times that we must live in. Creative people are a gift to the world. xo

  1. Beautiful, Lana. I had to look up the painting after reading and read again. Poem and image are vibrant. You capture the richness of color wonderfully. <3

  2. Your sultry words match perfectly with the color and feel of the painting, Lana. I love the way you refer to each day as a new and separate thing… “Ah, divide the world / into sunsets” and describe the peacocks as “shrill in their strut.” Art makes for great inspiration. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Thank you, Joan. Art does indeed make for some great inspiration. I didn’t always know about this painting, I saw it on Instagram a few weeks back and keep thinking how beautiful it is. You always wonder what was in the mind of the artist whenever they painted a piece. ๐Ÿ˜€

  3. Oh, Lana! This is sooo beautiful! Your words rival Gauguinยดs painting in every sense – I even think that if I havenยดt known the painting before, your words would have painted it for me right before my eyes! The colors shine through every word, the forms manifest themselves like by magic – youยดre not only an extraordinary writer and poetess – you are a magician as well!
And to dedicate it to me and your other artist friend is such a beautiful gift. Thank you very much, dear Lana, you really honor me with your friendship and inspiration! I will print this out and hang above my desk! Much, much love to you! xxxxxxx

    • You are very welcome, Sarah, and thank you for your very kind words. I just love that painting, and only recently became familiar with it. The Arts are so important, maybe even more so now as a way to “escape” and refresh our spirits during these turbulent times that we live in. Artists, painters, sculptors, crafters, all very special people in my book. Much love to you, also. xoxo

      • Itยดs a phenomenal painting! I love it too! All the warm colors, the several layers that seem to suck you into the painting deeper and deeper… he was a brilliant artist.
I agree with you on the importance of the arts and their role in escaping for a little while at least the hardships of life. But you forgot one very important group or artists in your list: writers!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ For me actually even more important than painters or musicians, although the last two mean the world to me ๐Ÿ™‚ Maybe because words are able to carry us into different worlds throughout a longer period of time and meaning than simple pictures, they linger so powerfully in our minds, at least in mine ๐Ÿ™‚
Have a very beautiful day, Lana, with lots of sunshine and creativity! Much love! xxxxxx

        • You are so correct, Sarah. I think we are all a pretty good group, ha ha. We make the world better through visual arts, paintings, crafting, books, movies, poetry, oh and yes, music, music, music! Have a lovely, creative, sunshine day also! ๐Ÿ˜€
